Parts -অংশ, of -এর, Sentence-বাক্যে অর্থাৎ বাক্যর অংশ। Sentence বা বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত প্রতিটি শব্দ-ই ভিন্ন ভিন্ন কাজ সম্পন্ন করে। কাজের ভিন্নতা অনুসারে বা শব্দগুলোকে বিভিন্ন শ্রেণীতে ভাগ করা হয়েছে। এদের প্রত্যেকটি ভাগই হলো এক একটি Parts of Sentence. মানব দেহকে যেমন বিভিন্ন Limbs বা অঙ্গ প্রত্যঙ্গের মাধ্যমে ভাগ করা যায়, তেমনি Sentence কেও বিভিন্ন অংশে ভাগ করা যায়।
The different kinds of words are called Parts of Speech – (Nesfield)
বিভিন্ন শ্রেণীর শব্দগুলিকে Parts of Speech বলে।
Words are divided into different kinds or classes, called Parts of Speech, according to their use; that is, according to the work they do in the sentence. –(Wren & Martin)
বাক্যে ব্যবহার অনুযায়ী বিভিন্ন শ্রেণীর শব্দগুলিকে Parts of Soeech বলে।

[Note] : Nesfield এর সংজ্ঞার চেয়ে Wren & Martin এর সংজ্ঞাতেই Parts of Speech আরো স্পষ্ট এবং পরিষ্কার হয়ে উঠেছে।
প্রকৃতপক্ষে Word গুলি Sentence বা Speech এর অংশ; সেজন্য এগুলিকে Parts os Speech বলে। (P.C.Das)
